Mission Statement
The Women and Minorities in Physics at UMass Amherst (WMP) is a mentoring group aimed at encouraging under-represented groups to study and find employment in Physics-related fields. Mentoring will occur at all levels from high school to professorial. The program consists of monthly meetings that will discuss issues that are relevant to under-represented groups in Physics. Weekly coffee hours will alternate between LGRT and Hasbrouck to bring the department together.
The program of activities will be posted on this website in the Events link above. Monthly activities will include information about obtaining the next position, academic vs. industrial positions, applying for grants and fellowships, and managing a family and career.
All are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings, as long as attendees are supportive of the mission of the mentoring group. Professors of the Department of Physics are especially encouraged to come to meetings. The goal is to connect more minority students with professors to be mentored both within the program and in research positions in active research groups.
