The UMass Pre-Medical Society
(U.M.P.S.) welcomes the Class of 2013! The switch from high school
to college life can be difficult but finding friends who share similar
interests can make the transition a lot easier and a lot more fun.
If you are interested in a career in healthcare or would like to
find out more, come check out the Premed Society!
U.M.P.S.
How long has the UMass Pre-Medical Society
been active?
UMPS was formed in the Spring of 2006 by a small group of students
who wanted to create a forum for their pre-medical interests. Since
then, the UMass Pre-Medical Society has considerably grown in size
to include over 400 members, nine officers, and multiple committees.
The group has been an official RSO since the Fall of 2006.
What can the UMass Pre-Medical Society offer
me?
As a student interested in entering a health profession, you will
have a lot of hard work ahead of you; the pre-medical requirements
can be both trying and confusing at times. By participating in a
group such as ours, you can gain the necessary information to decide
if a career in medicine is right for you. You can also meet other
students like yourself who have many of the same interests.
What kind of activities does UMPS participate
in?
Each meeting of the group, with exceptions to the first and last group
meetings, will include a guest speaker who will lecture on a topic
of interest as well as group news and activities. In the past we
have had representatives from Kaplan, University professors, doctors,
medical students, U.M.P.S. members, representatives from various
medical schools, and the pre-medical advisors, Prof. Brian and Karen
O'Connor speak to the group.
UMPS also likes to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities,
such as: MCAT prep workshops, etiquette dinners, “ice breakers”
activities, film showings, hospital tours, and various volunteer
activities. This group was put in place to provide YOU
with what you want, so U.M.P.S. is always open to any suggestions
for guest speakers, fieldtrips, and activities suggested to us by
members.
All meetings of the group will be posted on the website; the Pre-Medical
Society meets about twice month as a group and additionally for
any extracurricular activities. All meetings are also open to non-members
who may be interested in joining the group. Every meeting will have
a sign-up sheet for non-members.
The only requirements to become an official member of the Society
are as follows: pay the semester dues ($5.00) and attend at least
50% of all official group meetings. If for any reason you cannot
attend 50% of the meetings because of schedule conflicts U.M.P.S.
also has a credit system where you may volunteer at one of our various
events and recieve a credit which will take the place of attending
one meeting.
