Well ladies and gentlemen, it is official. In a few months I will be packing up all
my belongings into a U-Haul and making the famed trip down I-90 to central
Massachusettes. The reason for this move is because of my acceptance to the UMass
graduate program in physics. So I will be leaving behind the city I have called my
home away from home for the past four years, and as my roommate from New York reminds me
everyday, I am lucky. For as much as they dress it up and try to conceal it, Columbus, OH
is in central Ohio. And Central Ohio, as anyone who has lived anywhere else in the country
can tell you, is not the most exciting of places. It does have its moments, its fifteen
minutes if you will, when things can get fun and exciting, but for the most part, Columbus is
a typical Midwestern town surrounded by farms and cows. However, as much I love to make fun
and complain about Columbus, there is much I will miss about it. After living in a place for
a few years, there are definitely things that start to grow on you. So without further ado,
here is a list for things I will miss about Columbus, OH when I leave next fall.
- The Columbus Crew - You have to sit in the North Stands with the "V-army" aka
the soccer hooligans so that you can get the real experience of cheers that make no sense.
- Buckeye Football - There is nothing like a Buckeye football game. Even when the
team is mediocre. And the whole city is completely Buckeye crazy.
- The Field of corn - You have to see it to believe it; a whole field of huge ears
of corn made of stone planted in rows.
- Big Bear and Kroger - I have never seen these anywhere but in Columbus.
- Notal's Too - Freshman year, happy hour, not a single person over 21 in the whole bar.
- Street names - Columbus has a propensity to rename streets for periods of time. For
instance during the Mayor's "Commit to be Fit" campaign one of the streets was renamed
Commit to be Fit Blvd; Lane ave is now Champions Lane; and every December we get the famed
Nutcracker Blvd.
- Port Columbus International Airport - It's international because there is one flight
a day that goes to Toronto (or maybe its because of the flight to Cleveland).
- Port Columbus International Airport - It's one of the last airports where you can
get there one hour before you leave and still comfortably make your flight.
- Planck's Bier Garten - Half price pizza tuesday nights!
- Comfest - Annual fair at one of the parks in Columbus. A typical 24 hour period during
comfest goes something like this: Listen to live music, get a tan, buy a bong, listen to more
live music and increase your tan, stay up all night go to comfest parties and meet Angus Young,
catch the World Cup Soccer Championship game at 7:00 am.
- "Corporal Craig Sinclair"
- Big Bear Balloon fest - Staying out in the 90o heat all day without anything
to eat or drink so that we can get good seats for Blues Traveler
